Spooktalkular Episode 050

Mountain State Spirit Seeker Society

The big 5 0 is here and we had a fun time.  We talk about the incredible web series ParaAbnormal.  Check them out and recommend them to a friend today.  Due to popular response, we’re going to move to Sunday nights starting February 21st at 6:00PM Eastern.  We’re going to take next week off and do one more Monday night show on the 15th.

Tonight we were joined by the Mountain State Spirit Seeker Society to tell us a little about their group and some of the work they’ve been doing.  We’ve been trying to get these guys on for quite a while so it was great to finally get everyone together.  Great half hour with them.  Be sure to check out their website.

Our Independent Music Break featured ‘X My Eyes’ from The Russian Brides.  Remember to support independent music!

Make it the original My Bloody Valentine!

    Enjoying the podcast so far.

  • Mark Hayden:

Consider this another vote for the original My Bloody Valentine folks, a great competition by the way and kudos to wherever came up with it.

Another great podcast and as I tell you fine folk all the time how much I enjoy your show I hope you wont mind if I talk about this weeks guests.

I thought they were a fabulous listen. In today’s “anyone can do it” world of paranormal investigation I was impressed with the sheer duty of care they afford their clients, the seriousness with which they approach their presence in the problems of others and their mandate to ensure a safe and satisfactory conclusion to the investigation.

I have, on occasion, seen reports of others in the same line of work and it does strike me, sometimes, how some seem to be in it for the sensationalist aspect of it the poor folks who are being subjected to paranormal activity seem to take a back seat to a bunch of thrill seekers looking for the next adrenaline high.

A fascinating listen and a great bunch of folks and I look forward to when you guys can have them back again.

Here’s hoping Derek Acorah News becomes a regular fixture of the show along with further impressions and sarcasm :)

    Thanks for keeping it spooky!

Just finished listening to the whole podcast, including the nearly ten minutes I’d listened to yesterday. A very, very enjoyable podcast (I didn’t expect anything less).

That was a fascinating and highly enjoyable interview you did with the Mountain State Spirit Seekers Society. The subject was interesting enough, but I just liked hearing the names of towns in those parts of the US which I had never heard of before. The work they do feels like something on a larger scale but with a community feel to it as well. One of the things in the interview which stood out for me was when they mentioned that they check for carbon monoxide before searching for the spirits. Their approach and what they do has a down to earth, sensible, well thought out and not over the top feel to it as well.

The humour in the podcast between Frank and Laura was as funny as it always is, down to earth and sharp at times.

    Long may you continue!

To celebrate Spooktalkular reaching it’s 50th show I came up with the idea of making a list of all things I love about Spooktalkular, and the things which have happened on the show (highlights etc.) since I first started listening to the podcasts back in the summer of last year (around the end of the first season).

    1. Frank and Laura warn you, the early shows carry a health warning!

    2. The interview with Methodic director Chris R. Notarile, Tim McGhee, some of the actors from Harper’s Island

    3. “We need bumpers!” sounds like a little leprechaun!

    4. The variety of independent music acts

    5. Anna Mae Routledge’s and Jim Beaver’s interviews and bumpers (along with the other Harper’s Island coverage and interviews)

    6. Laura’s laughing fits

    7. Must make a shopping list (example being when Laura lost her notes, including for Haunted Headlines)

    8. “Spooky news y’all!”

    9. “I must get a new host”

    10. “My voice dosen’t sound like that!”

    11. Frank’s hilarious commentary on Paranormal State

    12. “EVP stands for…” (actually I haven’t said what it means because I can’t remember it!)

    13. Frank and Laura’s rants on paranormal TV

    14. The informative and interesting interviews with people involved in the paranormal (Mountain State Spirit Seekers Society being the most recent)

    15. The Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant

    16. The Fall Festival

    17. The Derek Acorah news segment

    18. Their support for independent movies (like Methodic, A Mannequin in Static, Ghost’s Don;t Exist and the short film Judith)

    19. Their contribution to panel discussions

    20. Their down to earth way with the show.

  • I’ve been meaning to this earlier, I admit it, I’M LAZY!

This is my top 15 list for what I love about (so, I might repeat what Richard said, sorry) Spooktalkular, even though I haven’t listened that much outside the BTFB chat and the recent live shows:

    21. I love being a spooky groupie!

    22. I love being a part of the live show chatting with people across the world.

    23. I love Laura’s laugh.

    24. I love Frank’s voice, great voice.

    25. I love the chat with the fella who was recording EVPs and had interesting videos on YouTube.

    26. I love the chat, on this show which I listened to live, with the Mountain State Spirit Seakers Society, what a great bunch of thoughtful people.

    27. I love the fact that I won a contest and there was NO DVD in the shrink-wrapped case LOL! :D

    28. I love that Frank does not deny his love of female eye candy but it must be intelligent so it will be more enjoyable ;)

    29. I love that the drum-roll didn’t sound good on one of the recent ones and you agreed on that – live!

    30. I love the creepy English soundalike “Haunted Headlines” bumper. I expect him to say, do you want some marmalade and biscuits with that?

    31. I love that Frank ignores Laura, like on this show, Laura had told Frank about the contest before and he said he ignored it LOL!

    32. I love how Laura says the word “fun”, it’s gonna be so much FUN. I adore Laura’s accent.

    33. I love that you guys say on a live show that you don’t know some info on a film you’re discussing and that you should have done research before the show, you’re only human and love you guys for it, there are only so many hours in a day…

    34. I love that Laura’s daughter told her that she was not Twittering correctly! How dare she say that? LOL!

    35. I love their cat, Salem, so cute.

Now, Mark…it’s up to you to finish it up to 50!
You can do it… all night long! :D

  • Mark Hayden:

You know me mister JKG, I can do anything I put my mind to, well, almost. So here’s the results of the British Jury as we take you to number 50 in the countdown of the 50 reasons why we love Spooktalkular. Congratulations on your Anniversary and may the ghosts and ghouls be with you for fifty more.

    36. I love Pottsie The Ghost: what’s not to love? He’s dead, white and capable of poltergeist phenomena. Sounds like the ideal house-guest to me.

    37. I love that you support independent horror and independent horror makers. I love indie horror and all those who enjoy a little walk on the low-budget side.

    38. Any paranormal podcast that discusses the more metaphysical preoccupations of haunted sex dungeons is fine with me.

    39. Frank’s English/Acorah is a joy to hear. I’m not sure it’s particularly English sounding, or even Acorah sounding, but it had me in stitches. I salut you.

    40. I love the Parawards, a fantastic idea that has taken off in ways I assume even you guys are surprised by. People love a great idea and this is a fine example of just that.

    41. I love that you are covering “Judith: The Night She Stayed Home”, I haven’t been this excited about an impending indie flick in aeons and I know you guys have for more planned for us and I wait it with baited breath.

    42. I love the superb coverage you guys did for Harper’s Island and the awesome interviews you had to boot. I happen to think you coverage of that show was second to non.

    43. I loved the interview with Alex Price. What can I say, I think I politely nagged Laura into doing it as we didn’t have a format at BTFB to speak to cast members from other shows. That said, aside from nagging it was all your hard work and I simply sat back and enjoyed the results and was able to squeeee with the best of them like a true fanboy. A great moment.

    44. I love the fact that you introduced me to Chris R. Notarile and Methodic. Without you guys I never would have heard of it and it has won a place in my heart as one of the best indie films of recent times. I thank you!

    45. I loved the fact that you guys supported myself and the BTFB campaign back in the days when were an apple in the eye of the good folk at TIWWA. You were one of the first internet sites to show interest and support in what we were doing and that support was always appreciated.

    46. I love anyone who owns a pink hat. I’m firmly of the opinion that wearing a pink hat should be mandatory. There probably ought to be a national holiday for such things.

    47. I loved the Classic Cinema section, a perfect little insert for anyone who, like me, thinks they don’t make horror like they used to do. I would love to see that back actually.

    48. I love the banter. You couldn’t script it. It’s refreshing, fun, honest and done without taking yourselves too seriously. Long may it continue,.

    49. I loved the 2012 discussion you had in the not too distant past. One of the most informative discussions on that subject I have heard for some time.

    50. I loved Kyle’s interview and I love the fact he may be coming back for more. Did I mention I love UFOS? ;)

And there you have it folks. Here’s wondering how lone it will take me when you guys reach a hundred lol

  • Wave_Crest:

That would take some time to do, a list of the 100 things we like about Spooktalkular!

  • admin:

Wow, first of all, my apologies for not replying sooner. As many of you know, I have taken some new responsibilities at work which have been demanding quite a bit of my time. The list is incredible. And amazing that what we have done has been so embraced by our listeners. Fifty episodes is one of those magic milestones that makes you pause and reflect at what you’ve been doing. When most podcasts on iTunes have an average length of 5 to 10 episodes before the hosts gave up, we could be considered old folks but I can honestly say, I hope this is just the beginning. ;) My most heartfelt appreciation goes out to each and every one of our listeners. I am so happy in reading the list that so much of what I feel so proud of about Spooktalkular has been captured below.

    Thank you so much!

    Spooktalk Frank
