Spooktalkular Episode 038

Another incredibly fun episode. Tonight we talk about the sad news of an indefinite hiatus from the incredible folks over at Ghostly Talk. ScottL, Doug and Bonnie have produced a first class show now for almost 8 years. Ghostly Talk is the rule by which the rest of independent paranormal podcast/radio should be judged. Guys, we’ll miss you and anxiously await your return! We also talk a little about some of the upcoming format changes here at Spooktalkular. As we’ve mentioned, we’re planning on going a little deeper into some serious paranormal topics. We start that off next week with a very special guest live, the incredibly interesting Marie D. Jones who will be talking all things 2012 with us.

As for this week, we dissect ‘Paranormal Activity‘. Be warned, if you haven’t seen it, we do a fairly lengthy discussion on it with an unlimited supply of spoilers. In a nutshell, we loved the concept but really feel more could have been done with it. After that, we talk some TV with ‘Ghost Hunters’, ‘Destination Truth’ and ‘Mystery Quest’.

Our Independent Music Break featured the song Oxygen from the incredibly talented Erica Shines. Be sure to pick up Erica’s album ‘I Will Wait For You’ over at CDBaby and always support independent music!

We round out the show with a wrap up of episodes 12 and 13 of ‘Harper’s Island’ and replay the Jim Beaver interview we did a few months back.

A couple of notes.  Be sure to send in your Spooky Stories for the contest.  Also, join us live on October 30th at 8:00PM Eastern when we’ll have the chat open along with the Mic for a special Spooktalkular.  We’ll be watching the Ghost Adventures Live crew when they investigate the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.   Be sure to get your Skype ready because we’ll be having listeners call in while we watch it.

Also, be sure to tune on on October 29th on the History Channel for a four hour marathon of the remaining ‘UFO Hunters’ episodes!  And, if you haven’t signed the petition to keep ‘UFO Hunters’ on the air, do it now.  Head over to www.ufomag.com and follow the link from there.

Spooktalkular Episode 028

We’re running a little late but better late than never, right? This is what we call a quickie or better yet, a nooner. We take a few minutes to talk about the current status of ‘UFO Hunters’. Be sure to head over to www.ufomag.com and check out how you can support ‘UFO Hunters‘ by signing the petition. While you’re at it, check out the effort over at www.backtofrankblack.com.

It’s Prize Day!!! Since this was the first episode of August, it’s time to announce the winners of the awesome signed M.R. Sellars books! The first book ‘Harm None’ went to Patrick from Missouri! The second book, ‘Never Burn a Witch’ goes to Valora from California and the third book ‘Perfect Trust’ goes to Emily from Canada! That wasn’t enough so we decided to throw in a bonus prize of a copy of the Jake Wheat CD ‘The Waverly Hills Sanatorium: Audio Experience‘. The winner of it is Bill from Canada!

Awesome Contest! Thanks to everyone for entering and thanks for listening to Spooktalkular.

We round out the show with a great interview with Tim McGee from over at www.freakcentral.net. This was actually Laura’s first solo interview. She did a great job.

Just a show note. I believe that we are going to give a live show a shot next Monday night August 10th at 8:00PM Eastern Time. We hope you’ll join us then!

Spooktalkular Episode 027

We have what could be considered for some a treat but yet for others Hell on Earth.  This week, we are doing a test run at a live show.  What we mean is we’re not going to edit this week’s show but instead, record it in one take.  I cringed hard and fought the urge to fire up Audacity and start cutting but we have to get used to it because when you’re live, there’s no retake.

With that said, a good episode.  We start off with a quick reminder.  If you’d like a chance to win a signed copy of one of M.R. Sellars first three books be sure to send an email to show at spooktalkular.com before the next Friday with the subject of “I Like Free Books”.  On next week’s show we’ll announce the winners.

We take a peek at the new Peter Jackson film ‘District 9′ due out on August 14th.  Cool trailer to listen to but even cooler to watch.  You can check it out on the movies home page.  Laura takes us into some Haunted Headlines for some interesting tidbits.  From there, we visit Classic Cinema for a look back at the 1980 film ‘The Fog‘.

Heading into television, we take a look at ‘Monster Quest’, a great episode of ‘Ghost Adventures’, ‘Ghost Hunters International’ and what will be our last visit to ‘The Listener’ since NBC has pulled the plug on it.

All in all, great episode.  Next week, interviews return.

This week’s Independent Music break is a great band out of Canada ‘The Wakening‘ with the cool song ‘Losing Control’!  As always, we are proud to feature Independent bands and we urge everyone to be sure to support Independent Music.

Thanks for listening and see ya next week!

Spooktalkular Episode 022

Well, after a short delay, and quite a production fight, Episode 22 is finally out the door.  We think it’s worth the wait.  It clocks in at two hours but it’s a packed full two hours.  We start off with our paranormal entertainment news.  From there, we hop on into Classic Cinema with this weeks pick of “Phantasm” from some thirty years ago.
I introduced Laura to a new (to her) podcast this week.  Check out the Anything Ghost podcast over at www.anythingghost.com.  Two other must-have podcasts are the Millennium Group Sessions with Troy and Jim.  You can find them over at www.backtofrankblack.com and click on Podcast.  As always, we thank our good friends over at Ghostly Talk.  You can check them out over at www.ghostlytalk.com for more info.

This week, during our Independent Music break, we feature the band Ground Mower with the incredible song “Hide”.  Be sure to head over to www.groundmower.com and support independent music.  Remember, independent music is the music that’s not sueing it’s listeners.
After the break, we talk TV.  This week’s lineup consists of “The Listener”, “MonsterQuest” and an awesome episode of “Ghost Adventures”.  We finish up the first hour with a discussion of episode 9 “Seep” of “Harper’s Island” complete with show audio clips.  Only four more episodes of “Harper’s Island” to go.  We’re gonna miss it.

The last hour is dedicated to our interview with the incredible paranormal author M.R. “Murv” Sellars.  I can’t remember the last time that we’ve laughed that much in an hour.  He’s a blast.  We discuss a wide range of topics including his awesome series of books in the continuing saga that is The Rowan Gant Investigations.  Stay tuned for a chance to win some cool RGI books courtesy of Murv himself.  ;)   Be sure to head over to www.mrsellars.com to learn more about the Rowan Gant Investigations and Murv.  While you’re over there, check out his blog and add him to your twitter.

Following Troy’s (Millennium Group Sessions, www.backtofrankblack.com) suggestion from a few weeks ago, we’ve been watching “Supernatural” in an effort to get caught up during the break.

Hope you like this episode.  It’s a great one!

Spooktalkular Episode 021

We’ve got a great show lined up.  We start off with a little paranormal news, then, we have our first independent music break.  This week’s band is Early April and the song is “Through the eyes of her”  It’s the title track off of their album that’s available as a free download from thier website.  Be sure to check out http://www.earlyapril.com and grab a copy.

When we come back from the break, we talk some TV and we introduce a new segment, Classic Cinema where we discuss the 1987 movie “Near Dark”.  If you have a favorite classic movie that you’d like to hear us discuss drop us a note.

Rounding out the show, we have a real treat.  Bill Birnes joins us from “UFO Hunters” and the “UFO Magazine” and sits down to talk UFOs, “UFO Hunters” and we even talk conspiracy.  It’s really a great interview.  Be sure to head over to the “UFO Magazine” homepage and sign the petition to keep UFO Hunters on the air for next season and many more to come!

The Listener

“The Listener” centers on Toby Logan, a 25-year-old paramedic who has a big secret — he’s a telepath. Until now, Toby kept his ability hidden, exploring its possibilities only with his longtime mentor and confidant, Dr. Ray Mercer. As he makes the rounds with his energetic paramedic partner “Oz” Bey, “The Listener” follows Toby as he tries to help people in crisis, and in the process unravel the truth about his past. While his professional life is in check, Toby’s personal life could use its own rescue. And with the help of Detective Charlie Marks and his E.R. doctor/ex-girlfriend Olivia Fawcett, Toby realizes his gift can help others.

Emotional Rescue – After saving a childhood friend from a burning building, Toby tracks down an arsonist whom he believes might be responsible for a series of fires in the city.

MonsterQuest

Flying Monsters – A deep trek into the jungles of Papua New Guinea which could be hiding a flying creature local villagers call the “Demon Flyer,” whose description is very similar to of the pterosaur of prehistoric origin.

Ghost Adventures

Preston Castle – For the second season opener, the “Ghost Adventures” crew head to California to spend the night in the Preston Castle

Harper’s Island

Gurgle – With Madison gone missing, Abby, Henry, Trish, Chloe, Cal, Jimmy, Sully, Shea, Katherine, Danny, Beth and Maggie stay behind to look for her, missing their chance to get off the island. Meanwhile, Sheriff Mills meets an old friend from the past, J.D. escapes from jail, and three more deaths occur.

Near Dark

A mid-western farm boy reluctantly becomes a member of the undead when a girl he meets turns out to be part of a band of southern vampires who roam the highways in stolen cars. Part of his initiation includes a bloody assault on a hick bar.

Spooktalkular Episode 019

Sorry for the delay but we think it’s worth it. The holiday and just an inability to knock this thing out Tuesday really delayed us a bit. Even with the wait, this episode came out awesome!

First off, we talk about some of the paranormal news for the week. Here’s the summaries and the links.

NBC has canceled the psychic drama Medium. Fear not though, CBS in what could be an awesome stratgic move has picked it up and added it to the Friday night lineup. It will air between “Ghost Whisperer” and “Numb3rs” for a Psychic Friday of sorts. The only thing that could have made it better is including Harper’s Island. http://www.thedailynewsonline.com/articles/2009/05/24/entertainment/doc4a19a0b18c984111500068.txt

Our favorite two plumbers are heading back to Buffalo, New York for a fan ghost hunt of the Central Terminal. One fan reported paying 250.00 in order to ghost hunt with the professionals. And to think, she could have ghost hunted with Laura and Frank for a lot less. http://www.wkbw.com/news/local/45883312.html

Even with a rerun, CBS nails Friday night. “Ghost Whisperer” grabbed nearly 6 million viewers. http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/05/23/friday-ratings-cbs-wins-how-might-dollhouse-have-done/19355 However, CBS didn’t fair as well Saturday night. ABC picked up the win with a game. http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/05/24/saturday-ratings-lakers-vs-nuggets-wins-easily/19363

“Ghost Whisperer” season one cast member Aisha Tyler is about to take on a new talk show role. She’ll be hosting the ABC show “The Aisha Tyler Show” where viewers can interact with her by Twitter and Facebook. Shoot, the podcast community has been doing that from the beginning. http://www.buddytv.com/articles/ghost-whisperer/former-ghost-whisper-star-aish-28899.aspx

Fort Mifflin appears to be back on sound financial footing. The fort was the scene of a horrible bombardment in 1777 during the Revolutionary War but the true battle lately had been paying the bills. Several in the paranormal community had taken up the cause and as of this article, they are in good shape. The director credits the paranormal investigations and Boy Scout overnights with the successful refilling of the coffers. http://www.philly.com/inquirer/entertainment/20090522_Fort_Mifflin_s_victory_over_money_troubles.html

Then we head into a great discussion from Laura on “Medium” and from there, a hillarious discussion of the season finale of “Paranormal State”. We finally get the missing “MonsterQuest” episode about the “Mysterious Ape Island”. Next, we head into “UFO Hunters” and wrap the show up with a really in-depth discussion of the latest “Harper’s Island”. It’s worth mentioning that we found a cool website for Harper’s Island. Be sure to check out www.harpersisland.tv for details.

Be sure to let us know your categories and nominees for the Spooktalkular listener choice awards.

Spooktalkular Episode 018

Spooktalkular Episode 18 is history.  Even with a sick Laura, we manage to get another episode of the show out.  This one has been the toughest episode to date to edit and prep for release.  In addition to Laura not feeling well, we had technical difficulties which caused some of the audio to be corupted.

Before we get rolling, we have some thanks to shout out.  Be sure to check out www.para-x.com.  Dave and Tom run a first class network over there with over 50 paranormal shows.  You’ll find something you like at para-x.com.  Also, our friends over at www.backtofrankblack.com have launched an incredible podcast named “Millennium Group Sessions”.  The latest episode has a cool interview with Marshall Bell who played the Judge in the episode of the same title.  Be sure to check them out and watch the site for news.

You’re probably wondering what you can expect from this one.  Well, let me tell you.  We watched some movies.  We start out with an INCREDIBLE independent project that you’ve heard us mention before named “Methodic“.  With it, a new horror genre is created.  Meet the basher flick.  Or, should we say, “Meat the basher flick”?  After that, we talk about “The Uninvited”.

On to TV talk.  Since we didn’t do the show last week, we have two weeks worth of shows to discuss.  That leaves us with two episodes each of “Monster Quest”, “Paranormal State”, “UFO Hunters” and “Ghost Whisperer”.  Due to a schedule change *again* over at CBS, we only have one episode of “Harper’s Island” but wow, what an episode it was.

Here’s the episodes we talk about:

Monster Quest

Gigantic Killer Fish II – A look at an 1895 fish attack off the coast of Florida by a Goliath grouper, a massive fish that can weigh in at 1,500 lbs and a recent attack that may be evidence these dangerous fish are returning – then off to the freshwater lakes of Minnesota where attacks by the no less aggressive Muskie could be on the rise.

Isle of the Lost Tiger – A look at over 350 reports from the Australian island of Tasmania that claim a vicious predator, once thought to have hunted to extinction, has made a comeback – the Tasmanian Tiger, and how an Australian biologist is using preserved DNA of the animal in hopes of cloning a living specimen.

Ghost Whisperer

Endless Love -Melinda has to figure out how to plan for her wedding and help a young lady get vampires to leave her alone.

The Book of Changes – Melinda hopes she can protect her baby after a ghost visits her. Season Finale

Paranormal State

Three Like Mine – Heather, Matt and their three kids are being harassed nightly by an entity in their Indiana home. Heather has been shaken by a force that says, “Hey” –  as if trying to get her attention — followed by the phrase, “Three to nine.” Psychic medium Michelle Belanger helps decipher a message that may be connected to the original property owners. Meanwhile Ryan investigates one of the client’s personal connection to the paranormal.

Dead and Back – Viki suffered a brain aneurism that left her on the brink of death. She fears the experience may have opened her up to unwanted spirits in her Alabama home. When psychic/medium Chip Coffey feels a connection to a male entity with familial ties, the case takes an emotional and creepy turn. PRS also experiments with new magnetic-pulse technology.

UFO Hunters

UFO Relics – Investigating so-called “trace cases,” the team studies supposed physical evidence left behind after various UFO sightings, from a strange glass-like rock found in Poland, to an odd piece of metal a Missouri man claims to have found after it was dropped from a UFO.

Underwater Area 51 – The investigators monitor the activity of the AUTEC (Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center), which is used by the U.S. Navy for underwater research, but the increasing reports of UFO and USO activity surrounding the facility have lead to rumors the base is testing alien technology.

Harper’s Island

Thwak – Abby uncovers a secret obsession as the wedding rehearsal takes an unexpected turn.

Spooktalkular Episode 017

I have to admit, this is probably one of the best shows that we’ve done so far.  After we give away an Hitchcock DVD, we start out with a great interview with Troy and Jim from over at backtofrankblack.com.  We had a blast and the audio quality is incredible.

After the interview, we hop on into television.  We check in with “Paranormal State”, “Ghost Hunters”, “Ghost Wisperer” and finish up with a good discussion of “Harper’s Island” including what we’re going to send CBS to get “Harper’s Island” back if they cancel it.  Laura promises to get the latest double episode of “Medium” watched so we can talk about it next week.  Sadly, we lost the latest “Monster Quest” before we got a chance to watch it.  If anyone has the Mysterious Ape Island episode of “Monster Quest”, let us know.  We’d love to see it.

Be sure to check out the Death Chart that we mention in the show for Harper’s Island.  It helps you keep track of the main players.

Spooktalkular Episode 016b

Well, after a small delay, we have episode 16b wrapped.  16a just didn’t come out like we wanted so we just blew it away and we both agree that 16b is much much better.

This week, we discuss the movie “A Haunting in Connecticut”.  We finally got out to check it out.  As for TV, we hit on “Paranormal State”, “UFO Hunters”, “Ghost Hunters”, “Monster Quest”, “Ghost Whisperer”, “Medium” and finally, we end up with a fairly in depth discussion of the first three episodes of “Harper’s Island”.

We hope you enjoy and below are some of the links from our news section.

Special Thanks to the crew over at Ghostly Talk and, Dave and Tommy from KAPS!

Jennifer Love Hewlett slips a nipple on Ghost Whisperer.  The Backseat Cuddler recently posted a couple of pics showing the slippage but don’t expect much.  You really need a lot of imagination to see it.  http://backseatcuddler.com/2009/04/25/jennifer-love-hewitt-slips-a-nipple-on-%E2%80%9Cghost-whisperer%E2%80%9D/

Showing that they are still on top, our two favorite plumbers since Mario and Luigi nail a season high 2.9 million viewers for their Titanic episode that was filmed at the Georgia Aquarium.  In their fifth season so far, Ghost Hunters have been on top five out of six weeks for Wednesday night.  The show is number one for the 18 to 49 and 25-54 adults in the 8-11 Primetime spot for Wednesday.  This puts Sci-Fi as the #1 cable network on Wednesday nights.  http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/04/17/ghost-hunters-scares-up-season-high-29-million/16924

Yvette Fielding is campaigning to have the speed limit enforced on the road by her home in Cheshire.  The posted speed limit is 60mph but motorists are known to drive as fast as 90 on the stretch.  Fielding says she is sometime afraid to turn out of her home onto the road for fear of being hit.  According to her, she was hit once which left her with some whiplash injuries.  http://www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/news/Road-scares-Haunted-presenter/article-899173-detail/article.html

In a Twofer for Most Haunted, I ran across an article from the Manchester Confidential about an evening with Derek Acorah.  He’s now touring John Edwards style allowing all the departed a voice to speak with the living…  For a fee of course.  The article wasn’t too kind.  http://www.manchesterconfidential.co.uk/index.asp?sessionx=IpqiNwY6JDXoIpqiNwF6IHqi

Spooktalkular Episode 014

Spooktalkular episode 14 is history.  Pretty cool episode.  It was a blast to do.  We introduce the first annual Spooktalkular Celebrity Ghost Hunt.  Highly recommended to listen, it’s a blast.  We discuss the usual television.  “Ghost Hunters”, “Paranormal State”, “UFO Hunters”, “Most Haunted” and “Ghost Whisperer”.  We share the news that “Ghost Whisperer” has been renewed for a fifth season.  “Ghost Hunters” is doing another spin-off that’s touted as a “College Edition”.  Sounds like it’s an attempted at doing a Sci-Fi rip-off of “Paranormal State”.

Then, we move on to a serious note.  Jake Wheat from Street Blast Media contact us last week about being involved in a charity that he’s close to.  He has made the “Waverly Hills: The Audio Experience” CD available with 100% of the proceeds going to Stomp Out Cancer, a charity that helps battle Ewing’s Sarcoma.  Incredible CD and an increible cause.  We urge every listener to head over to iTunes and grab a copy today.  If you do, let us know what you think about the CD.  We loved it.

Before we head out, we quickly check in on our friends over at backtofrankblack.com.
